Igbo lidded container carved from wood. This lidded container also referred to as “okwa oji”  has a hollowed-out rectangular shape in the center into which kola nuts would be filled. The lid itself is of rectangular shape with a spiral-shaped relief carved sections that appear to be a handle. Four wooden raised nodules separate the dish almost into quarters, one edge a pattern has been scratched out in the shape of diamonds and the general condition of this item is good especially given its age.

Provenance: Walter Haüsler, Thurgau, acquired in Nigeria in the 1960s.

History

The Igbo or Ibo as they are also known are one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa. Due to the diversity of the Igbo people, it is impossible to generalize about a pure Igbo art style. Igbo/Ibo people share and eat the kola nuts during rituals and on ceremonial occasions. One never enters a house without receiving a drink and a kola nut as a sign of the occupant’s hospitality, and the serving trays are important in this context. Carved in hardened blackened wood, they vary in execution and motif depending on the means and taste of the owner. It is a common ritual object among the Igbo/Ibo but they do vary in decoration some being more decorated than others. However, the main usage remains the same and that is all about sharing at rituals, ceremonies, and celebrations. Traditionally, kola nuts are regarded as a sacred nut used to communicate with the gods, given that it was chosen by the elders as the head or king of all seeds.
